State of the knowledge of the migratory birds in the Choco region, Colombia

Abstract

Objective: To document the migratory bird species registrad in the different research projects in the Department
of Chocó.
Materials and methods: The present study was conducted in different parts of the Choco geography; using
methods standardized for the knowledge of the diversity of sites in particular, using networks of mist and
watching with binoculars, at varying times during the day, from 5:30 to 10:30 and 16:30 to 18:00.
Results: Register 37 species of migratory birds, grouped into 13 families and four orders, the passerines to
be the best represented with 22 species, 18 genera and 8 families. The Scolapacidae was the best represented
with four genera and seven species; followed by the family Parulidae with six species. Of 37 species reported
in this research are 33 migratory boreal, four are migratory southern and the species Vireo olivaceus (Redeyed
Vireo) characterized by a double latitudinal migration.
Conclusions: The Department of Chocó is little known in terms of richness of bird species and especially the
communities of birds that come to nurture the diversity of this group in the tropical forests of Chocó.
