Abstract

Cahuita National Park is found on the southern Caribbean of Costa Rica. It presents many different habitats both marine and terrestrial, among these, the tropical humid forest life zone can be found. Despite its natural wealth, there are many information gaps. Objective: Create an inventory of the birds of Cahuita National Park. Methodology: Information about the area was collected prior to field work, afterwards, sampling was carried out in ten randomly selected parcels (500m x 500m), between April 11th and April 21st of 2015. Visual and audio records were obtained through systematic surveys. Mist-net captures and nonsystematic searches were also conducted. Species were identified through field and audio guides. Additionally, species accumulation curves were made. Results: 210 species were registered, belonging to 19 orders and 48 families, which represent 23% of species present in Costa Rica (161 were observed in the field and 49 were reported through other sources). Five of the registered species are considered endemic to the region and four are under the category of “Nearly Threatened” according to IUCN. Additionally, 49 migratory species and 10 species with mixed population (resident as well as migratory), were reported. Conclusions: the high diversity of this protected area may be due to the wide variety of present ecosystem which constitute potential habitats for species of open areas, forest interior, marine and fresh water areas. The variety of registered species is evidence of the importance of this park for the conservation of the avifauna of the region.
