Abstract

Objective: To characterize the community of birds present in the Popayán Botanical Garden, in the department of Cauca, Colombia. Methodology: The samplings were carried out between the months of July to November 2017, in three stations located in the protection areas of the Renacer, Mano de Oso and Corazones streams. Fog nets were used for the capture. Results: 222 individuals were registered, distributed in 49 species, 17 families and five orders. The most representative family by number of pecies was Thraupidae with 13 (26.5%) species, followed by Tyrannidae with 7 (14.2%), Trochilidae with 4 (8.1%) and Turdidae with 4 (8.1%) species. The species Myarchus apicalis endemic to Colombia and the boreal migratory species Catharus ustulatus, Empidonax virescens and Setophaga fusca are reported. According to feeding habits, generalist and insectivorous species were the most abundant in the study area. Conclusion: The protection areas associated with the streams located within the grounds of the Botanical Garden of Popayán are of great importance for the survival of native and migratory species, by offering food, shelter and nesting areas, being influenced by the presence of communities of birds for the different seasons of precipitation.
